The site is renowned for its expertise in submarine construction. Employing around 8,500 people, BAE Systems in Barrow plays a crucial role in the local economy and the broader defence sector.

The Challenge

Protect bodywork from damage and reduce the risk of fires caused by sparks.

Recently the customer discovered sparks from traditional grinders were causing damage to the bodywork of vessels, resulting in costly damage and increasing the risk of fire. The challenge given to Abbey was to design, test and fit a modification to the grinder which would protect the bodywork against the sparks.

Our Solution

Design, test and fit a bespoke part.

After assessing the application and the tooling we designed, tested and fabricated a bespoke part to fit to the tool.

The bespoke part was developed in conjunction with BAE operatives and engineering department, so it complied with all relevant health and safety standards, including HAVs.

The new part successfully captures sparks and prevents damage to the vessel in production, and thus mitigates costly damage and fines.
